ICEC2024 - Second International RILEM Conference on Earthen Construction

ICEC2024 Earthen Construction Edinburgh

Second International RILEM Conference on Earthen Construction

The First RILEM International Conference on Earthen Construction (ICEC 2022) was hosted by the Université Gustave Eiffel in March 2022. The conference was organised and delivered by members of RILEM TC 274 TCE: “Testing and characterisation of earth-based building materials and elements” to disseminate the findings of that TC and to recruit members to the three new TCs which emerged: RILEM MAE, PEM, and BEC (all Cluster E).

The Second ICEC will provide a forum to present work on a wide range of topics related to earthen construction, building upon the work of TCs MAE, PEM, and BEC whilst also encouraging submissions from outside of those activities. The conference aims to attract new members to the RILEM TCs, to broaden the global network of earthen construction researchers, and to identify opportunities for future research or TC topics. Contributions from authors on the following topics are encouraged:

  • Material characterisation

  • Hydro-mechanical behaviour

  • Reinforcement behaviour

  • Seismic behaviour

  • In situ and field testing

  • Quality control

  • Additive manufacturing (3D printing)

  • Rheology

  • Scale effects

  • Biostabilisation

  • Molecular simulation

  • Physical chemistry

  • Microstructure

  • Durability

  • Fire performance

  • Hygro-thermal behaviour

  • Air quality

  • Life cycle analysis

  • Climate change adaptation

  • Economic impacts

  • Cultural history and architecture

The International Seminar on Vernacular Settlements (ISVS), is one of the longest-running seminar series in the field of vernacular architecture and settlement studies. Started in 1999 in Depok, Indonesia, the seminar has covered different parts of the world, such as India, Sri Lanka, North Cyprus, and Turkey. Through this, the ISVS has networked a community of scholars, professionals, and academics that have contributed to the seminar in various fields and capacities.

The ISVS envisions contributing knowledge in the field of vernacular settlements around the world. This is to establish the meaningfulness and relevance of vernacular traditions, as well as cultural practices in the contemporary world. Those who participate in ISVS seminars contribute to their development and facilitation

International Seminar - Which future for Vernacular Architecture & Earthen Architecture?

International Seminar & Round-Table on:
Which future for vernacular architecture & earthen architecture?

During the last years, vernacular architecture and earthen architecture have faced multiple challenges worldwide, which have threaten their survival. In several regions, intangible knowledge is disappearing fast, in part due to the fact there is less people keeping the building culture and its know-how alive.

To discuss the future of vernacular architecture and earthen architecture, we are inviting interested professionals and researchers to meet in Porto, on June 15 & 16, 2023.

The event will be structured in three sessions with debates and a round-table. The International Seminar on Vernacular and Earthen Architecture will be dedicated to vernacular documentation, World Heritage, intangible knowledge, knowledge transfer, climate action, adaptation, and a final round-table discussion with input from participations. The key-purpose of the round-table will be to establish ways forward, on how to keep vernacular and earthen architecture alive.

A publication with the paper’s proceedings, and the round-table notes, will be published in 2023.

Sessions:

Session 1: Preserving the Past - Vernacular documentation & World Heritage

Session 2: Valuing the Present - Intangible knowledge & knowledge transfer

Session 3: Preparing for the Future - Climate action & adaptation

Round-Table: Which future for vernacular architecture & earthen architecture?
